Reflections on the Passages:
Amos was a prophet during a time of prosperity for those in power. Their luxurious lifestyles begin to turn Amos’ attention to those in the margins, the poor, the hungry, the powerless. Israel eventually became a province of the Assyrian empire, 150 years before Judah fell to Babylon. Amos calls out a distorted view of reality, challenging the system in charge, and demanding change and justice. Just like the days of Amos, the friends of the man in the gospel will stop at nothing to seek the help their friend needs. Even if that means tearing open the roof of injustice.
- What does the word “justice” mean to you?
- Who has been a stretch bearer in your life? Or the life of others?
- What stones of justice do you need to listen to this Lenten season?
