I hear this frequently. “I’m interested in joining the choir/bells, BUT, I just don’t know…” I get it. I put up the appearances of having all my ducks in a row (I don’t) and, okay, yeah, I’ve spent a lot of time and money and time and God-given talent and time fostering my musical talent. (Did I mention time?) It can be intimidating. I’ve been told that *I* can be intimidating. So let me see if I can address some FAQ’s here to calm your fears!
I can’t be there every Sunday.
Totally okay! No one is there every Sunday.
I can’t be there every Wednesday for rehearsal.
Just like Sunday, that’s fine! We have folks who miss rehearsals, too. For the big stuff like Christmas and Easter, I try to share recordings and — if available — part tracks to help you learn your part so you can still practice on your own even if you have to miss.
I don’t read music.
About half the choir (or more) doesn’t read music. During rehearsal, I try to explain “music terms” and the folks around you who DO get what is going on always help out. The quickest thing to learn is what a measure is, so that way you’ll always know where we are. That takes about 15 seconds to learn!
I’m not sure I can sing/I don’t sing well.
It says in the Psalms, “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord”. In fact, it says that SIX TIMES in the Psalms!! And it says, “joyful”, not perfect or flawless or in tune or anything else. Bottom line, we are called to sing our praises to the Lord, and the choir helps with that.
I don’t know anyone in the choir.
The way to meet people in the choir is to come to rehearsal! I’d argue that most of the friendliest people in the church are in the choir. If you like to laugh, the choir is definitely the place for you — we love to joke around and have fun in rehearsal.
Can I just come to rehearsal but not sing on Sunday mornings?
If that is what you are comfortable with, that is fine with me. I will never ask you to do something that you are uncomfortable with.
I am transgender. Do you have experience working with transgender voices?
As a voice teacher and conductor, I do have experience working with transgender voices. No matter where you are in your transition, I am experienced and more than happy to include you!
Is your choir an LGBTQ+ safe space?
YES AND A THOUSAND TIMES OVER, YES. I was the accompanist for the Orlando Gay Chorus for a year. I am personally a proud ally and you are safe in this program.
